Emulating the Prophet's Behavior When Angry
Anger is a natural emotion and sometimes unavoidable. However, the way we manage it reflects a person's wisdom. In the Sirah of Prophet Muhammad SAW, there are several stories that show how he controlled his anger with great gentleness and wisdom.
The Story of Umar bin Khattab RA and a Young Man
One famous story is when Umar bin Khattab RA, a close companion of the Prophet SAW, almost killed a young man who had insulted his father. Umar, known for his strict nature, was very angry and intended to punish the young man. When the Prophet SAW heard about this, he immediately went to the scene. He asked, "O Umar, what have you done?" Umar replied, "I want to punish this young man because he insulted my father." The Prophet SAW then said, "O Umar, which is better: killing this young man or forgiving him and leaving the matter of punishment to Allah SWT?" After hearing the Prophet's advice, Umar chose to forgive the young man. This story teaches that forgiveness and patience are better than revenge and anger.
The Story of Prophet SAW and a Woman
In another story, Prophet SAW was once attacked by a woman who often criticized and insulted him. One day, while the Prophet was walking, the woman came and threw garbage on him. The companions who witnessed the incident were very angry and wanted to punish the woman. However, the Prophet SAW remained calm and said, "Let her be. If she is satisfied with her actions, then we are also satisfied." After some time, the woman heard about the noble character of the Prophet SAW and eventually embraced Islam. This story shows how great the influence of gentleness and patience can be in changing people's hearts.
