Zendejas's World Cup Journey
Alex Zendejas, the 28-year-old winger for Club América, is one of the most talked-about names in the United States (USMNT) squad for the 2026 World Cup. Born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, he moved to the United States as a child before returning to Mexico to begin his professional career. His decision in 2021 to represent the USMNT — rather than his birth country — garnered significant attention, given his eligibility for Mexico as well. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, who took over the team in January 2025, included him in the 26-player roster without much initial fanfare — a bold move that is now being tested by his lack of playing time.
Reserve Player Role
In the first two group matches, Zendejas did not receive any minutes on the field. He remained on the bench as the US secured 3-0 and 2-1 victories over Paraguay and Australia, respectively. Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah dominated the attacking flanks, while Zendejas could only watch from the sidelines. However, his popularity was evident: during an open training session before the Paraguay match, his Club América jersey was one of the most sought-after for autographs by fans at AT&T Stadium.
“I know the opportunity will come,” Zendejas said after training, without explicitly mentioning a date or opponent. He emphasized focusing on daily physical and tactical preparation — not on the frustration of watching. Pochettino, meanwhile, described Zendejas as “a player with high quality and the ability to make a difference,” but stressed that the competition in the USMNT's attacking department is among the toughest in the squad's history.
Opportunity Against Turkey
The third group match against Turkey on June 26 at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium could be a turning point. The US has already secured qualification for the Round of 16 as Group D winners, making the match inconsequential for qualification standings. In such situations, Pochettino typically uses the opportunity to test second and third-choice players — especially those who haven't played yet. Zendejas, known for his dribbling speed, crossing accuracy, and ability to penetrate defenses from the right flank, is expected to feature either as a winger or a second striker.
What's Next?
If Zendejas plays against Turkey, it will mark his World Cup debut. His performance will be evaluated not just on goals or assists, but also on his ability to energize the attack through off-ball movement and high pressing in the final third. The US is scheduled to face the winner of Group C — either Sweden or Iran — in the Round of 16. Pochettino will need flexible attacking options, not just replacements, but strategic alternatives. Zendejas has scored 12 goals in 30 appearances for Club América this season, including some crucial goals in El Clásico Mexicano. However, competition from Brenden Aaronson, Giovanni Reyna, and young talents like Malik Tillman remains fierce. For now, Zendejas is not demanding — he is ready.
