What's Truly New About the New Kona EV
Design That No Longer Resembles the Old Generation The new Kona EV is not a 'little bit' different — it is completely different from top to bottom. The body lines are more defined, the front and rear LED lights have been redesigned with dynamic light patterns, and the new bumper gives a lower and more stable appearance. New 18-inch alloy wheels are available in three designs, while the color options have expanded with two exclusive variants: *Midnight Grey Matte* and *Coral Dawn*. No longer resembling a regular mini SUV — this is an electric vehicle that knows who it is.
Touchscreen That Talks to You The infotainment system now uses a 12.3-inch touchscreen — not only larger, but also faster and smarter. It runs on Hyundai's latest OS platform, with automatic software updates via the internet (OTA). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now support full wireless mirroring, including offline navigation that is automatically synchronized. Digital maps are updated every three months, not once a year.
400 km Range, 7.5 Seconds to 100 km/h The 64 kWh lithium-ion battery is not just a number — it brings real improvements in daily use. WLTP tests show a range of up to 400 km in mixed city-highway conditions. The new electric motor produces 201 hp and full torque of 350 Nm from the start. The regenerative system can also be set in three stages — from 'silent' to 'maximum recovery' — through the paddle behind the steering wheel.
Price and Release Date for Malaysia Official pricing has not yet been announced, but internal sources from Hyundai Malaysia confirm that the price range will be between RM180,000–RM200,000, depending on the variant (Premium or Ultimate) and additional packages such as Bose audio system or extra body protection. First deliveries are scheduled for June 2027, after the global launch in Seoul in March 2027.
Why This Matters for Malaysian Buyers Now
Public charging station infrastructure has increased by 73% since early 2024 — now more than 1,200 active locations across the Peninsula and Sabah-Sarawak. The new Kona EV is not only suitable for KL-PJ commuters, but also capable of traveling from KL to Penang without stopping for charging. It also fully meets the requirements for electric vehicle tax incentives under the LEV 2025 Scheme, including import tax and GST 0% reduction.
This Kona EV refresh is not just an 'update'. It proves that Hyundai no longer sees the ASEAN market as a place to offload old stock — but as a testing ground for truly mature electric technology.
