This main objective is centered on the transition to 100% renewable energy as the generator of all electricity and local fuel supplies.
The grandeur of this system is clearly evident when tourists arrive at the island's coastline, where mega wind turbines spin majestically in sync with the constant maritime winds. Large-scale coastal wind farm projects combined with mega solar panel arrangements across the volcanic arid land now generate a significant portion of the island's daily power supply. The local government even uses smart micro-grid platforms in remote villages, allowing rural communities to be self-sufficient in power generation and can sell excess electricity back to the central grid to drastically improve the local socioeconomy.
In addition to continuous electricity generation, Jeju is actively targeting a fully green mobility ecosystem through the provision of extensive infrastructure. Most of the tourist car rental systems on the island have been mandated to switch to electric vehicles (EVs) absolutely, making it one of the areas with the highest density of public charging stations compared to any region in Asia. Furthermore, local bus fleets and taxis also receive special incentive funds to end the use of fossil fuel engines as soon as possible. A comprehensive ban on plastic waste is also outlined in efforts to clean up the surrounding seas.
This maintenance effort is not without various geopolitical and logistical challenges. Complaints from a few traditional transportation management companies must be addressed to ensure smooth policy compliance without sidelining public revenue. However, the local community realizes that the sustainability of Jeju Island is their lifeline; the beauty of its floral ecosystem is the main source of the enduring flourishing tourism sector. Making the environment and user-friendly technology the backbone of future progress, Jeju is seen not only driving the sustainable economy in Asia but also opening a global chapter in the success of the carbon-free agenda.
