In the beauty of Islamic law, a person's faith is not measured solely through specific ritual acts of worship, but is also beautifully reflected through actions and personality towards fellow human beings. The religion of Islam brought by Prophet Muhammad SAW serves as the complement to the perfection of human morality. Every polite utterance, sincere smile, and patience in facing trials among fellow creations holds a very high value in the sight of Allah SWT.

To understand how immense the position of character is in the scale of deeds, a famous hadith narrated by his companion, Abu al-Darda' radhiallahu 'anhu, provides a very clear and touching depiction of a believer's personality value on the Day of Reckoning.

Text of the Hadith and Translation of the Virtue of Noble Character

It is narrated from Abu al-Darda' radhiallahu 'anhu, that Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

«مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَثْقَلُ فِي مِيزَانِ الْمُؤْمِنِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيُبْغِضُ الْفَاحِشَ الْبَذِيءَ»

Meaning: "There is nothing heavier in the scale of a believer on the Day of Judgment than noble character. And indeed, Allah truly hates the person who uses foul and vulgar language."

(Narrated by at-Tirmidhi, no. 2002. Imam at-Tirmidhi stated that this hadith is Hadis Hasan Sahih)

This concise yet meaning-packed hadith opens our eyes to the virtue of character. Prophet Muhammad SAW emphasized that the deed that most heavily weighs down a servant's scale of virtues in the plains of Mahsyar is not merely difficult voluntary acts of worship, but rather the adornment of oneself with husnul khuluq (noble character).

The Position of Character in Sharia and the Scale of Deeds

Noble character is not merely an external adornment or social ethics created by humans; rather, it is the main pillar of genuine faith. In Islamic teachings, ritual worship such as prayers, fasting, and zakat function as soul molders and heart purifiers. When these acts of worship are performed with utmost sincerity, the fruit of that worship will manifest through good behavior toward family, neighbors, colleagues, and the surrounding community.

Scholars explain that the meaning of husnul khuluq encompasses three main pillars: restraining oneself from harming others (kafful adha), bestowing goodness and assistance (bazlul nada), and displaying a pleasant and radiant face (basyasatul wajh). When a believer strives to train their soul to practice these three matters consistently, these deeds will become heavy upon the scale of Mizan, erasing minor sins and elevating their status in Paradise.

Shunning Foul Speech and Harsh Traits

In the second part of this hadith, Prophet Muhammad SAW issued a stern warning regarding a trait greatly hated by Allah SWT, namely al-fahisy al-bazhi' — referring to a person who is fond of uttering foul, harsh, censuring, and dirty words. This hadith pairs the beauty of character with the ugliness of speech to impart the lesson that faith cannot coexist with a loose tongue.

The tongue is a mirror to the contents of the human heart. A heart filled with the light of faith and the remembrance of Allah will radiate words that are good, reconciling, and beneficial. Conversely, a hard and negligent heart frequently utters criticisms, slanders, overly hurtful jokes, and impolite language. In today's digital era, this warning becomes increasingly relevant where our writings and comments on social media also translate the character and cleanliness of the tongue we possess.

Manifestation of Noble Character in Daily Life

Practicing noble character does not require massive capital, but it demands patience and a continuous battle against desires. Among the manifestations of noble character that we can practice in daily life include:
  • Patience When Oppressed or Angered: Being able to control anger and forgive the mistakes of others is a sign of a believer's firmness of soul.
  • Politeness in Speech: Using gentle, honest words that do not degrade the honor of fellow human beings.
  • Respecting and Helping Neighbors and Friends: Facilitating the affairs of others and not causing discomfort in our surroundings.
  • Pleasant Countenance and Friendliness: Greeting and saying salam with a sincere smile that brings peace to whoever looks at it.

Lessons and Morals for the Reader's Life

  • Do Not Belittle Small Good Deeds: The greatest lesson from this hadith is the reminder not to underestimate small acts of kindness in daily interactions. Many acts of virtue that appear simple in human eyes hold soaring values in the sight of Allah SWT because they are executed with clean character.
  • Supplicating for Good Character: Let us constantly invoke prayers to Allah SWT as once taught by the Prophet SAW to be bestowed with good character and protected from bad manners. May our every utterance and daily action become the weight on our scale of virtues in the hereafter.
