The Moment of Dawn at the Prophet's House
The morning light had just slipped through the cracks of the palm leaf walls. In the corner of the simple house, Juwairiyah binti al-Harith—wife of Prophet Muhammad SAW—was kneeling on a prayer mat. Her delicate fingers were still wet from wudhu, and her lips never ceased whispering the name of Allah. Her days as Ummul Mukminin were filled with worship, yet this morning was special.
Suddenly, a soft voice she recognized stirred her heart.
"Are you still here since this morning?"
The Prophet SAW had just returned from the mosque after performing the Fajr prayer. From afar, he saw Juwairiyah still in the same position—unmoved from where she sat. He approached and said:
"Indeed, I have recited four words three times since leaving you. If they were weighed against what you have recited since this morning, it would be heavier."
A Light Thread, as Heavy as the Throne
What were the words taught by the Prophet? They were not long recitations, nor did they require hours of concentration. Just four verses that are easy on the tongue but heavy in the scales:
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ، وَرِضَا نَفْسِهِ، وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ، وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ
*"Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, 'adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinata 'arshihi, wa midada kalimatihi."*
Meaning: "Glory be to Allah and His praise, as many as the number of His creation, as much as His satisfaction, as heavy as the weight of His throne, and as much as the ink of His words."
This remembrance is so special that scholars call it "Zikir Juwairiyah". In a hadith reported by Muslim and Tirmidzi, the Prophet described that this remembrance—despite being performed for a short time—matches all of Juwairiyah's acts of worship done since the morning.
Between Love and Blessings of Time
This story is not just a historical account, but a deep lesson about the blessings of time and love for Allah. Juwairiyah was a woman who was very devoted to worship. Since dawn, she never missed an opportunity to remember Allah, so much so that when the Prophet returned, she was still in the same place. However, the Prophet wanted to teach that the effectiveness of worship is not measured solely by quantity, but by quality and sincerity of the heart.
Juwairiyah's remembrance reminds us of the grandeur of Allah, which surpasses all limits: the number of creatures that cannot be counted, the unmatched satisfaction, and the vastness of His words that exceed the ocean of ink. In our busy daily lives, this remembrance becomes an oasis of tranquility that can be recited while walking, driving, or waiting for something.
An Everlasting Practice
In this digital era full of distractions, many people find it difficult to maintain consistency in worship. Juwairiyah's remembrance offers a solution: an efficient yet profound approach. Just a few moments, but the reward seems as if we have been remembering Allah all day. This is the beauty of the Prophet's Sunnah—offering ease without diminishing the reward.
For Juwairiyah, this remembrance became her daily practice that strengthened her soul. In the quiet of the dawn, she continuously repeated these words, absorbed their meaning, and felt the presence of Allah in every heartbeat. These words were no longer just utterances, but the pulse of her life.
Reflections for Us
The story of Juwairiyah's remembrance teaches us that Allah never neglects the deeds of His servants, even the smallest ones. What matters is sincerity and earnestness of the heart. Like a single thread that appears light, but when tied with love and faith, it can lift the scale of reward as heavy as the throne.
Let us revive this Sunnah in our daily lives—not just as a ritual, but as a manifestation of our love for the Creator. Start tomorrow morning, when the sun has not yet risen, with the whisper of Juwairiyah's remembrance. Surely, an ordinary morning will become extraordinary.
