Seoul, 24 June โ The South Korean entertainment industry, or Hallyu (Korean Wave), once again proves itself as the most influential soft power in modern global culture. New data released by the Korea Creative Content Agency reveals that the value of cultural content exports from South Korea has reached USD 14.3 billion in the fiscal year 2025-2026, a figure exceeding the export value of several more traditional Korean industrial products.
K-Dramas remain at the core of this success. Global streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon continue to compete fiercely to acquire exclusive broadcasting rights for the latest Korean drama series, sometimes at prices reaching tens of millions of dollars for one series. Korean dramas are no longer just popular in Asia โ they dominate trending charts in Europe, Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East.
What distinguishes Korean dramas from other entertainment products is their consistently high production quality. With budgets now comparable to premium American dramas, Korean series are produced with outstanding acting, captivating cinematography, and scripts filled with emotional depth and unpredictable twists. New genres introduced by Korean dramas such as 'romantic thriller' and 'comedy horror' have now become templates followed by content producers around the world.
K-Pop continues to maintain its position as the most global music phenomenon. New generation K-Pop groups emerging after BTS and BLACKPINK continue to drive global interest, with concerts in America, Europe, and Latin America selling out within minutes of ticket release. The K-Pop merchandise industry alone generates billions of dollars in revenue every year.
The South Korean government supports this growth through various support programs, from grants for small and medium-sized content studios to active promotion programs at international entertainment expos such as MIPCOM in Cannes and TIFF in Toronto. South Korea has also developed world-class content production hubs in various areas around Seoul, equipped with Hollywood-scale film sets and the most advanced post-production facilities.
Hallyu also has a direct impact on the South Korean tourism sector. Millions of Korean culture fans from around the world visit Seoul and other Korean cities to trace locations from their favorite dramas, try Korean cuisine they recognize from dramas, and experience firsthand the life in the country that has captured their hearts through television screens.
